Etna 3000 Tour Highlights
The Etna 3000 South – Cable Car Round-Trip Hike is an adventure designed for travelers who want to experience the very essence of Mount Etna without tackling the summit craters.
Starting from Rifugio Sapienza at 1,900 m, the cable car quickly carries you up to 2,500 m, reducing the initial climb and allowing more time to enjoy the high-altitude volcanic landscapes. From there, the hike begins on foot and immerses you in some of the most impressive features of Etna’s southern slope.
You will walk across the lava fields of the 2002 eruption. This landscape of black basalt and twisted rock formations is one of the most striking examples of Etna’s constant transformation.
The hike continue inside a lava flow tunnel. These natural caves, created when the surface of a lava flow solidifies while molten rock continues to move beneath, reveal the inner mechanics of volcanic eruptions.
Reach the Barbagallo Craters, located at 3,000 m. These secondary cones were formed during the eruptions of 2002 and stand as monumental reminders of Etna’s power. From the edge of these craters, the panorama is breathtaking: the main summit craters rise above you, while the immense Valle del Bove opens on the eastern slope below, offering dramatic views that stretch all the way to the Ionian coastline.
Unlike the more demanding Etna Summit Craters Tour, this itinerary is suitable for hikers who prefer a moderate level of difficulty while still enjoying high altitude and close contact with volcanic features. It is also a perfect complement to other experiences such as the Etna 4×4 Jeep Tour or the Mount Sartorius Craters Walk, allowing visitors to explore Etna from multiple perspectives.
With expert volcanological guides ensuring safety and providing insights throughout the hike, the Etna 3000 South excursion is a must-do for anyone who wants to fully understand and experience the extraordinary environment of Mount Etna.

FAQ – Etna 3000 South Cable Car Hike
Do we reach the summit craters on this tour?
No. This excursion reaches the Barbagallo Craters at 3,000 m on the southern side of Etna, not the summit craters at 3,300 m. If you want to go higher, check our Etna Summit Craters Tour.
Is the cable car ticket included in the price?
It depends on the package you choose. Some tours include the round-trip cable car ticket from 1,900 m to 2,500 m, while in other cases the ticket is paid separately at the station.
Will we visit a lava tunnel during the hike?
Yes. A fascinating part of this tour is the chance to safely enter a lava flow tunnel created by past eruptions. Your guide provides helmets and lights to ensure safety inside.
How difficult is the hike from 2,500 m to 3,000 m?
The hike is considered moderate difficulty. The terrain is uneven and volcanic, but there are no technical climbs. Good fitness and sturdy hiking boots are required.
Can children join the Etna 3000 hike?
Yes, children aged 10 and above with suitable fitness levels can participate if accompanied by an adult. For younger kids or families, we recommend the easier Mount Sartorius Craters Walk.
What if weather or volcanic activity changes suddenly?
Safety always comes first. If weather conditions or volcanic activity make the area unsafe, the guide may alter or cancel the itinerary. In that case, alternative routes such as the Etna 4×4 Jeep Tour may be suggested.
