Etna North — Piano Provenzana

Piano Provenzana sits at 1,800 m on the northern slope, near Linguaglossa. This is the volcano at its most authentic: black lava deserts from the 2002 eruption, rare birch forests, panoramic views of the Nebrodi mountains — and far fewer people. There is no cable car: the high slopes are reached with authorized 4x4 vehicles on guided tours, which is exactly why the landscape has stayed wild.

Choose the north if: you want authenticity, fewer crowds, birch woods, and you sleep in Taormina or on the Ionian coast.

Etna South — Rifugio Sapienza

Rifugio Sapienza, above Nicolosi at about 1,900 m, is the most famous gateway to Etna and the closest to Catania. Here you find the cable car to 2,500 m, the Silvestri craters a few steps from the parking area, and full services: shops, restaurants, hotels. The price of convenience is company — in summer and at weekends the south side is busy.

Choose the south if: you want the cable car, maximum services, a quicker visit, or you are based in Catania.

Which side for which traveller?

  • Families with kids: south for the cable car and services — or the gentle Sartorius walk on the northeast slope, the easiest trail on the volcano.
  • Hikers: north for the summit craters tour, south for the Etna 3000 cable car + hike.
  • Short on time: south from Catania; north if you are already in Taormina.
  • From Taormina: north — about 1 hour's drive.
  • Photographers: north, for the birches against black lava and the emptier frames.

Safety and closures

Both sides can close at short notice during volcanic activity — decisions are taken by the authorities, and guided tours adapt their routes day by day. Before you plan, you can look at the volcano live on our webcam and read whether Etna is active right now and what it means for visitors.

North vs South — your questions

Which side of Etna is better?

Neither is 'better' — they are different. Choose the north (Piano Provenzana) for authentic, quiet landscapes and the wildest scenery; choose the south (Rifugio Sapienza) for the cable car, more services and quicker access from Catania. We guide on both.

Can you visit both sides in one day?

Technically yes — the drive between Piano Provenzana and Rifugio Sapienza takes about an hour — but you would spend the day in the car. If you have one day, pick one side and do it well; with two days, one side each is the ideal plan.

Which side is better from Taormina?

The north. Piano Provenzana is about 1 hour from Taormina and the Ionian coast, while Rifugio Sapienza is significantly further. From Catania, the south is closer.

Which side has the cable car?

Only the south side: the cable car leaves from Rifugio Sapienza (about 1,900 m) and reaches 2,500 m. On the north side the high slopes are reached with authorized 4x4 vehicles on guided tours.
