Guided group standing on the lava fields of Etna's north side at Piano Provenzana

Etna 2002 Craters Hike

From Piano Provenzana across the lava of the 1923 and 2002 eruptions, on the quiet north side of the volcano.

This is the hike to the scene of Etna's most destructive recent eruption. From Piano Provenzana, on the north side, you walk about 5 km in roughly 3 hours through beech woods and black lava fields, up to the rim of the craters that opened in 2002 — crossing the older lava of the 1923 eruption on the way. Private, your group only, with a certified volcanological guide: €250 for the group.

What this hike really is

On the night of 26 October 2002 the ground opened on Etna's north side, just above Piano Provenzana. A line of craters — the bottoniera, craters set in a row like buttons — poured out lava that swept through the ski station and burned into the pine forest below. Twenty years on, the flow is still black and sharp, the dead trees are still standing at its edge, and those craters are where this hike takes you.

The route starts at Piano Provenzana (about 1,800 m), the main tourist area of the north side, and climbs to roughly 2,000 m. You walk on and alongside the lava of 1923 and 2002, through beech woods and open volcanic ground, up to the 2002 craters. It is a real hike on loose, uneven terrain — not a stroll — but there is no extreme altitude and no exposed passages. Round trip, about 5 km.

What the guide adds

Your guide is a certified volcanological guide who works this side of the mountain all year. Along the way you learn how the 2002 fracture opened and where the lava went, how the older 1923 flows differ from the 2002 ones, and how life is coming back — the pioneer plants on the black sand, the animals that returned first. Pace, stops and length adapt to your group, because nobody else is walking with you.

Essential information

What to bring

  • Warm layers and a windproof jacket — it is cooler than at the coast
  • Hiking boots with ankle support (trainers and sandals are not suitable)
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • At least 1 litre of water
  • A buff or bandana for the volcanic dust, and a small backpack

Meeting point and time

  • Piano Provenzana (about 1,800 m), the main tourist area on Etna's north side: the walk starts here.
  • Open Piano Provenzana on Google Maps
  • We agree the starting time with you when we confirm the date.

When it runs

  • All year round.
  • From late autumn the trail can be under snow: waterproof boots and warm layers become essential, and the guide adapts the route.

Important information

Minimum age 7. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition: the ground is loose volcanic rock and ash. The hike is not suitable in pregnancy or for people with heart problems, high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes or knee and back problems.

The itinerary can change on the day because of volcanic activity, weather or safety: the guide decides on site, and that call is part of what you are paying for. The hike runs all year — in winter the trail can be under snow, which changes the walk completely.

Not up for walking, or travelling with someone who is not? The private cable car and 4x4 tour reaches 3,000 m with no hiking. Undecided which side of the volcano to pick? Here is the north side compared with the south.

Questions about the 2002 craters hike

How hard is the 2002 craters hike?

Moderate. About 5 km round trip in roughly 3 hours, from 1,800 m at Piano Provenzana up to around 2,000 m, on loose volcanic ground. No extreme altitude, no exposed terrain, but it is a proper hike: anyone who walks regularly will be fine.

Can children come?

Yes, from age 7. Because the tour is private, the pace and the length are set by your group — with children the guide shortens the stops and keeps the walk moving.

What will we actually see?

The beech woods of the north side, the lava fields of the 1923 eruption, and the row of craters — the bottoniera — that opened in 2002 above Piano Provenzana, with the trees killed by that flow still standing at its edge. On a clear day the view runs down to the Ionian coast.

Does it run in winter?

Yes, all year. From late autumn the trail can be covered in snow: the guide adapts the route to the conditions and will tell you what to wear. Waterproof boots and warm layers become essential.

How is it different from the Sartorius walk?

Sartorius is easier and lower: an hour or so through birch woods and the gentle 1865 craters, good for grandparents and small children. The 2002 hike is longer, steeper and rougher underfoot, and it is about a recent, destructive eruption you can still see the scars of.

Could not recommend Vincenzo more highly. Everything from communication ahead of time, flexibility and advice around our options given weather and volcanic activity, to the trip itself. Vincenzo was knowledgeable and passionate about Mount Etna, was great with the kids, and gave us a memorable day out. It is the clear highlight of our trip.

★★★★★
Amazing guide! Very kind and caring, gave us jackets and boots because we went to the top of the Etna and it was a cold day. He led us on paths where other groups didn't go and gave us some freedom that only comes in small groups that he is leading. I loved that personal touch and would recommend Vincenzo anytime with great confidence.

Quite simply, one of the best hikes that we have ever had! Vincenzo explained very clearly what our hike options were based on the weather, was very well prepared, and gave many insightful and interesting explanations during the hike. Clearly, we would never have had even half the experience without his guidance. Thanks Vincenzo!
