Why a quad, and not a jeep?
On a jeep tour you watch the landscape; on a quad you are inside it. You control the vehicle, you choose your line on the trail (behind the guide), you feel every change of terrain — ash, lava gravel, forest floor. Quads also reach paths too narrow for 4x4 vehicles, which means stretches of volcano most visitors never see.
The ride, step by step
- Briefing and test ride. Helmets on, safety instructions, a few minutes of practice — no off-road experience needed, just a valid driving licence.
- Into the lava. The route alternates black ash plains, rugged lava paths and pine and birch forest trails.
- The cave. A stop to walk into a volcanic cave formed by ancient lava flows.
- The viewpoints. Panoramic ridges over craters, the Valle del Bove and the Ionian coastline — photo stops included.
- The return. A last off-road section and back to base, dusty and grinning.
What you feel — the honest part
The engine vibration in your hands, pine resin and volcanic dust in the air, the crunch of lava gravel under the wheels. It is an active, physical way to meet the volcano — more effort than a jeep, far less than a summit hike. Two hours pass fast.
Who enjoys it most
- Couples and groups of friends after a shared adventure
- Families with teenagers (minors ride as passengers)
- Travellers who want nature, geology and adrenaline in one go
