Pack light, but pack right. Most of an easy Etna day comes down to a handful of things in a small backpack — water, sun protection, a warm layer and the right shoes. This is the kit you carry; for the clothes you wear, see what to wear on Mount Etna.

The essentials (every excursion)

  • Water — at least 1–1.5 litres per person; there are no fountains up high.
  • Sun protection — high-factor cream, sunglasses and a hat. The sun at altitude is fierce, even through cloud.
  • A windproof layer — the top is 10–15 °C colder and windier than the coast, in every season.
  • A snack — nuts, a bar or fruit; the air and the effort burn energy fast.

Footwear and pack

  • Closed shoes with grip — trainers at a minimum, ankle-high boots for summit and crater hikes. The ground is loose gravel and sharp lava.
  • A small day pack — to carry the essentials and keep your hands free on uneven ground.

The small things people forget

  • A fully charged phone (cold drains batteries fast up high) for photos and safety.
  • A light hat and gloves in the cold months — hands and ears feel the wind first.
  • A little cash for a coffee or a rented jacket at the mountain huts.
  • Any personal medication, plus lip balm — the dry wind chaps skin quickly.

Extras by type of excursion

  • Summit craters hike: extra water, gloves and hat even in summer; poles help some people on the descent.
  • 4x4 jeep tour: a windproof and a camera — you make short walks in the open.
  • Sunset or night tour: a headlamp or torch is essential for the walk back, plus an extra warm layer.
  • Wine tastings and low slopes: nothing special — you stay at village altitude.

What your guide provides

On our excursions the guide brings the safety kit — first aid, radio and the local knowledge that matters most. Helmets are provided where they are needed, such as on the 4x4 jeep tour. You bring the personal items above; we bring everything else. If you are unsure about any of it, just ask when you book — we would rather answer twice than have you cold on the mountain.

What to bring to Etna — quick answers

What should I bring to Mount Etna?

Water (at least 1–1.5 litres), sun protection (cream, sunglasses, hat), a windproof layer, sturdy closed shoes, a snack and a small backpack to carry it all. Even in summer add a warm layer, because the top is 10–15 °C colder than the coast.

Do I need to bring water on Etna?

Yes — there are no fountains up high. Bring at least 1 to 1.5 litres per person for a half-day, more for a full summit day. The altitude and wind dehydrate you faster than you expect.

Do I need a headlamp on Etna?

Only for sunset or night excursions, where a small headlamp or torch is essential for the walk back in the dark. For daytime tours you do not need one.

Is a backpack necessary for Etna?

A small day pack makes everything easier: it carries your water, spare layer, sun cream and camera and keeps your hands free on loose ground. Nothing large is needed for a standard excursion.
